Whose Medicine Am I Taking?
Hi i found some really cool article about wha drugs and how they they are production is affecting our environment Millions of steroids, anti-depressants, antibiotics, sex hormones, drugs for cancer and heart disease and other drugs Americans swallow every day end up in our sewage, reappear in our drinking water and are consumed again …not, of course, by those for whom they were intended. More recently, an investigative team from the Associated Press (AP) surveyed the water source for 50 major cities in the U.S. as well as the water source for 52 smaller communities. The study found up to 56 drug chemicals in the drinking water in some areas and the widespread presence of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water of more than 41 million Americans. You can read more from this link check it out and let's discuss it http://findgreenstuff.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1783:whose -medicine-am-i-taking&catid=13:planet-helper&Itemid=49 |

I agree that the existing laws on water pollution need to be enforced. If the federal government is going to take the time to make the laws, then it should find the time to enforce the laws. However, I do not expect an increase in federal funding for water clean up any time soon. This article focuses on the need for federal funding, but it doesn't explain the difficulties involved with funding. In order for the federal government to increase its budget for water clean up, it would have to take funds from other programs by lessening those budgets or increase taxes. Unfortunately, our current administration places many priorities over that of water quality so taking funds from elsewhere seems out of the question right now. Also, in the midst of a economic slump, raising taxes would definitely not be the popular way to get more funding for water clean up. I do think this is a major issue and it needs to be fixed; however, the federal government is not at the right position to do so right now.

You're statement that FJS was not chosen to be the ranking member of the House judiciary committee following the take-over of Congress by the Democrats is not entirely true. The Republicans place a six-year term limit on all committee chairs. FJS was finishing his third term as House judiciary chairman in 2006 and was therefore ineligible to serve in a leadership position on that committee even if he wanted to.

| fdeveau | ethanol vs. investment in foreign economies | 1 | Apr 16 2008, 12:36 PM EDT by katie.dorman | ||||

Thread started: Apr 8 2008, 8:04 PM EDT

The discussion on ethanol makes some good points. However, it ignores the huge investment in foreign economies that our country is currently making by its reliance on petroleum. We all know what's happening at the gas pumps. Those dollars are going to foreign countries; some of which are bent on the destruction of this country. Others are purchasing our domestic companies. It may well be worth an increase in taxes to become energy independent. Brazil made the investment in alcohol years ago and is now virtually energy independent. The cost to Brazil was significant at first, but it has paid off.
I am not advocating taking a blind eye to the environmental problems that ethanol can create. Those problems can be dealt with, in part, by government restrictions on the use of fertilizer. Also, new technology will further reduce emissions as emission controls are enhanced. In summation, many of our country's current political and economic problems are due to our dependence on foreign oil. Ethanol can go a long way towards eliminating that dependence. We need to keep our eye on the big picture while evaluating alternative energy sources such as ethanol.
